Permeability Studies

BioPAL offers stable-isotope labeled albumin for permeability studies.  This product is available in three different isotopic markers and additional labels can be provided upon request.  This product line is suited for a wide range of research applications and can be used in conjunction with other labeled products.  In addition, BioPAL also offers gadolinium-labeled albumin (Galbuim) for MRI applications.

Cardiovascular Studies
In shock models, labeled albumin provides the ability to measure total blood volume (TBV) using multiple time points.  As a marker of vascular permeability, BioPAL's labeled albumin can serve as a surrogate end-point in experimental models, such as studies involving degradation of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) or the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) and in studies assessing alveolar capillary permeability in lung injury models.  Given the availability of multiple isotopic markers, control and intervention measurements can be performed in the same in vivo protocol.

Gastrointestinal Studies
Labeled albumin provides the ability to evaluate gastrointestinal protein loss and intestinal microvascular permeability in experimental models.  BioPAL's labeled albumin can be used in combination with other labeled probes.

Renal Studies
Labeled albumin can be used as a glomerular sieving marker.  This product can be used in combination with BioPAL's GFR reagent (RenalRate™).  Given the availability of multiple isotopic markers, control and intervention measurements can be performed in the same in vivo protocol.

The Product

  1. Stable-Labeled Albumin
Three different stable, isotopic labels are available.  Labeled albumin is packaged in a 2 mL vial.  Each vial contains 1.0 ml of albumin at a concentration of 25 mg/ml.  Additional labels can be provided upon request.

  2. Contaminant-Free, Sample Vials
BioPAL's polypropylene sample vials are cleaned to remove trace contamination and are calibrated for our activation and counting system.  These vials must be used for the assay.

  3. Assay Service
BioPAL charges a per-sample assay fee.  The results of the assay are reported as the total disintegrations per minute (dpm) measured in each sample for each corresponding label.  BioPAL offers two assay services: a standard assay service (LLD ~ 0.5 µg of label protein) and an enhanced assay service (LLD ~ 5 ng of labeled protein).
